Hey there, welcome back. I’m Doctor Thomas Etue, and you’re listening to the Kingfisher Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Bellingham, Washington. Today we’re talking about something I think is going to surprise you — because it’s not about going to the gym, it’s not about running a marathon, and it’s not about overhauling your entire lifestyle. Today we’re talking about small, daily movements — and how they might be the single most powerful thing you can do to protect yourself from chronic pain.

Now, here’s the thing. Most people think pain just… shows up. One day you’re fine, the next day your back is killing you, and you have no idea why. But what I see in my practice, day after day, is that chronic pain is almost never sudden. It builds. Slowly. Quietly. And it usually builds because of what we’re not doing — not what we are doing.

Let me break this down for you. Your body is designed to move. Every joint in your spine, every disc, every muscle — they all depend on movement to stay healthy. When you sit in the same position for hours, or you repeat the same limited motions every single day, your tissues start to tighten up. Your muscles lose their balance. Your joints stop moving through their full range. And over time — weeks, months, years — that’s where chronic pain gets its start.

Here’s what’s interesting. Research in movement science has shown us that the spine, in particular, relies on motion to stay nourished. The discs in your back don’t have a direct blood supply the way your muscles do. They absorb nutrients through movement — through gentle compression and release, almost like a sponge. So when you stop moving, those discs can start to break down faster. That’s a big deal.

Now, you know what I hear a lot? People say, well, I just have a desk job, there’s nothing I can do about it. And I want to push back on that — gently — because there is so much you can do. And none of it requires a gym membership or a big block of time.

Here’s what I recommend to patients all the time. First — set a reminder to get up and move for just two or three minutes every hour. Stand up, walk to the kitchen, roll your shoulders, do a few gentle neck turns. That’s it. You’re not working out. You’re just reminding your body that it’s alive. Second — add some intentional stretching in the morning. Even five minutes before your feet hit the floor. A gentle low back stretch, a hip opener, a chest opener. These small investments pay huge dividends over time. And third — when you walk, be present about it. Swing your arms, stand tall, take full strides. Walking is one of the most underrated tools we have for keeping the spine healthy.

The goal here isn’t perfection. It’s consistency. A little bit of movement, done regularly, beats an intense workout once a week every single time when it comes to preventing chronic pain.

Now, when should you come see us? Honestly, you don’t have to be in pain to benefit from chiropractic care. If you’ve been feeling stiff in the morning, if you notice your posture has been slipping, if you get that familiar ache in your neck or low back after sitting — those are early signals. Don’t wait until it becomes something bigger. Come in, let us take a look, and we’ll build a plan that fits your life.

At Kingfisher Chiropractic, we’re not just here for the bad days. We’re here to help you feel good consistently — so the bad days come less and less often.

Thank you so much for spending a few minutes with me today. If you found this helpful, share it with someone who spends too much time at a desk — which, let’s be honest, is most of us. And if you’re ready to take the next step, give us a call or stop by. We’re right here in Bellingham, and we would love to meet you. I’m Doctor Thomas Etue, and we’ll see you next time.
