Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Thomas Etue, and you’re listening to the Kingfisher Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Bellingham, Washington. Today we’re talking about something simple, something free, and something almost all of us can do — walking. Specifically, what walking does for your spine, and why I think it might be one of the most underrated things you can do for your back health.
Now, I know what you might be thinking. Walking? That’s it? But stick with me here, because I think by the end of this episode, you’re going to look at your daily walk a little differently.
So let’s start with the basics. Your spine is not meant to be still. It’s designed for movement. The discs between your vertebrae — those little cushion-like structures that absorb shock and keep your vertebrae from grinding together — they don’t have a direct blood supply the way your muscles do. Instead, they get their nutrients through movement. When you walk, you create a gentle, rhythmic compression and decompression in the spine. Think of it like squeezing a sponge in and out of water. That movement helps pump nutrients into the discs and flush out waste products. So when we sit for long periods of time, we’re actually starving those discs a little bit. Walking brings them back to life.
Here’s something else I find really interesting. Walking activates what we call your stabilizing muscles — the deep muscles along your spine that are responsible for holding everything in alignment. A lot of people focus on big superficial muscles when they think about back strength, but it’s those deeper stabilizers that really protect your spine day to day. And walking, even at a casual pace, engages those muscles in a coordinated, natural way. It’s like low-level physical therapy that your body was literally built for.
Now, here’s the thing — not all walking is created equal when it comes to spinal health. Posture matters. When you’re out on your walk, try to keep your head up and your gaze forward, not down at your phone. Let your arms swing naturally. Keep your shoulders relaxed, not hunched up toward your ears. And think about walking with a gentle, heel-to-toe motion rather than shuffling your feet. These small adjustments make a big difference in how much benefit you’re actually getting for your spine.
If you’re just getting started, don’t feel like you need to go out and walk five miles on day one. Start with ten or fifteen minutes a day. That’s genuinely enough to begin making a difference. Build from there as your body gets comfortable. Here in Bellingham, we’re pretty lucky — we’ve got beautiful trails, waterfront paths, and parks that make it pretty easy to enjoy a walk. So take advantage of that.
Now, if you’ve been dealing with back pain, neck stiffness, or just that general feeling that your body is tighter than it should be — walking is a great starting point, but it may not be the whole answer. Sometimes there’s an underlying misalignment or restriction in the spine that’s limiting your progress and making movement harder than it needs to be. That’s where getting a proper evaluation can really help.
At Kingfisher Chiropractic, we look at the whole picture — your posture, your movement patterns, the alignment of your spine — and we help you figure out what’s going on and what to do about it. A little bit of chiropractic care combined with consistent walking can do wonders for how you feel day to day.
So my challenge for you this week is simple. Get outside and walk. Even just a short one. Pay attention to your posture. Notice how your back feels before and after. Your spine will thank you.
